Land is essential to human existence, and therefore the connection between humans and land will never be severed, regardless of how its historical form may change. Land ownership is one way in which humans are connected to land, and historically there have been various forms that correspond to the stages of social development. If we roughly divide these from a world historical perspective, there are six: (1) (primitive) communal land ownership, (2) slave land ownership, (3) feudal land ownership, (4) peasant land ownership, (5) modern land ownership, and (6) socialist public land ownership.

土地は人間の生存に不可欠であり，したがって人間と土地との結びつきは，その歴史的形態がどのように変わろうとも，永久に切れることがない。〈土地所有〉は，そのような人間と土地との結びつき方の一つであるが，歴史的にみれば，社会の発展段階に照応するさまざまな形態がある。それらを世界史的視点からおおまかに分けてみるならば，(1)(原始)共同体的土地所有，(2)奴隷制的土地所有，(3)封建的土地所有，(4)農民的土地所有，(5)近代的土地所有，(6)社会主義的土地公有の六つになる。
