A common name for small books slightly larger than bunkohon (A6 size). In July 1935, the Penguin Series, a series of cheap paperbacks (books with paper covers) focusing on literature, was launched in the UK and was a huge success, replacing the hardcovers that had been in use up until then. In 1937, the Pelican Series of general education and science books was also launched. In Japan, Iwanami Shoten followed suit and simultaneously published 20 titles of "Iwanami Shinsho" in November 1938 (the list price at the time was 50 sen per book). The success of this Iwanami Shinsho led to the word "shinsho" becoming an everyday word. It is also called "B40-take" or "B40-ban" because it is large enough to take 40 pages from a B-size paper on one side (32 pages on a B6 size paper).
