In 1876, Karl von Kupffer (1829-1902), a professor at the University of Berlin, stained liver with gold chloride and discovered star-shaped cells that stained with the gold chloride, which he named stellate cells (Sternzellen). Then, in 1898, he announced that the cells that take in foreign substances (ink) in the endothelium of the sinusoidal capillaries in the liver of animals injected with India ink are stellate cells. Since then, it has become customary to call the cells that take in foreign substances in the sinusoidal capillary walls of the liver Kupffer's stellate cells.
