...One theory is that the name comes from the fact that the merchant Suminokura Ryoi, who retired to Saga, a western suburb of Kyoto, in his later years, loved this type of doll and encouraged its production. Eventually, this technique spread to Edo, where the name "Edo Saga" was born in addition to the Kyoto-made dolls, and they were also called "okiage dolls" because of their bold coloring.
