[What kind of disease is it?] The area inside the lower jaw that is covered by the underside of the tongue and corresponds to the bottom of the mouth is called the floor of the mouth, and on both sides of the floor of the mouth are the sublingual glands. A callus is usually a relatively soft, thin-walled, painless swelling that occurs on either the left or right side of this area. The surface is covered with smooth, normal mucous membrane, and the interior is transparent and appears bluish. When the swelling becomes severe, it looks like the pouch in the throat of a toad, hence the name toad swollen throat. When the salivary ducts of the sublingual glands located on both sides of the front of the floor of the mouth become blocked, saliva accumulates and a cyst (a sac-like mass) forms. Traditionally, treatment involved surgery to remove the contents and then prevent the duct from closing again, but it is now thought that removing the sublingual gland will lead to a permanent cure.
