Japanese: クセ(曲) - くせ

A term used in Noh. A type of utaiji. It is a narrative verse piece based on the 7-5 rhythm, incorporating the medieval popular art form kusemai. It is one of the longest utaiji pieces, and is located in the center of the piece. Because it is the highlight of the utai, many lines with more or less characters are used to add variety, and the composition also places emphasis on changes in rhythm. Many of them are stories told by the shite role, and may involve the actor's own experiences, such as love stories or military tales, or hearsay, such as the origins of temples and shrines or historical events.

能の用語。謡事の一種。中世の流行芸能である〈曲舞（くせまい）〉を取り入れたもので，七五調を基準とした叙事的韻文の楽曲。謡事の中でも長大な部類に属し，一曲の中心部分に位置する。謡の聞かせどころでもあるため，変化をつけるために字余りや字足らずの句を多用し，作曲上もリズムの変化に重点をおいている。多くはシテ役の物語りで，恋物語や軍（いくさ）語りなどの自己の体験を語る場合と，寺社の縁起や故事来歴などの伝聞を語る場合とがある。
