1808‐83 Algerian politician. After the occupation of Algiers in 1830, armed resistance movements were organized throughout the country against the French colonial policies in Algeria. Abd al-Khadir was a representative leader of this movement and is considered the father of the modern Algerian national movement. Born to a noble Arab family in western Algeria, his father was the leader of a Sufi order, but in 1832 he was elected Amir al-Moumineen and launched a jihad (holy war) against the invaders.
