Their appearance is depicted in the Muromachi period artisan painting "Seventy-first Artisan Poetry Contest." Medicine peddlers developed in the early modern period, with bases in Etchu Toyama, Yamato Tanba City, the Soja area in Bitchu, and the Nishi-Kambara region in Echigo. According to the "Toyama Medicine Sales History Outline," Toyama in particular began around the Genroku period (1688-1704) when Maeda Masafusa, the lord of Toyama, ordered Matsuiya Gen'emon to dispense medicines using the recipe for anti-soul medicament introduced by the Bizen monk Mozu Jōkan. They then expanded their sales channels nationwide with a unique sales method called "okiyaku" (placed medicine). It is said that poison-relief sales in Echigo began in the Keichō period (1596-1615), and developed as a way for women in fishing villages to earn money. → Related topics Peddling | Door-to-door sales Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
