Founded in 1881 by Kintaro Hattori as Hattori Watch Shop, selling watches, and in 1892 opened the Seikosha factory to expand from sales to manufacturing. Since then, the company has produced various watches and camera shutters. The Seiko trademark is well known and the company is the top watch manufacturer in Japan. In 1969, the world's first quartz wristwatch was released. Since the late 1970s, the growth of watches has been sluggish, and the proportion of non-watch products such as computer-related products has increased. In 1983, the company was renamed Hattori Seiko, and in 1997, it was renamed Seiko. In July 2001, it became a holding company. In July 2007, it was renamed Seiko Holdings.
