A ceramic artist from Kyoto. Born in Shirakawa, Sanjo-dori, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City. His real name was Yaichi. In April 1912 (Meiji 45), he became an apprentice at the Kyoto City Ceramics Testing Institute, and in 1916 (Taisho 8), he founded the Sekido Company with his classmates. He won a prize at the Paris Exposition in 1925, and was selected for the Teiten Exhibition in 1927 (Showa 2), after which he was active in official exhibitions. In 1954 (Showa 29), he received the Japan Art Academy Prize, became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1987, and was named a Person of Cultural Merit in 1972. In 1978, he was awarded the Order of Culture. In ceramics, he developed a unique decorative technique called Saien, and in addition to simple forms, he created a style that respected the emotions of nature.
