Yaichi Kusube

Yaichi Kusube

A ceramic artist from Kyoto. Born in Shirakawa, Sanjo-dori, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City. His real name was Yaichi. In April 1912 (Meiji 45), he became an apprentice at the Kyoto City Ceramics Testing Institute, and in 1916 (Taisho 8), he founded the Sekido Company with his classmates. He won a prize at the Paris Exposition in 1925, and was selected for the Teiten Exhibition in 1927 (Showa 2), after which he was active in official exhibitions. In 1954 (Showa 29), he received the Japan Art Academy Prize, became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1987, and was named a Person of Cultural Merit in 1972. In 1978, he was awarded the Order of Culture. In ceramics, he developed a unique decorative technique called Saien, and in addition to simple forms, he created a style that respected the emotions of nature.

京都の陶芸作家。京都市東山区三条通白川に生まれる。本名は弥一。1912年(明治45)4月に京都市陶磁器試験所の伝習生となり、19年(大正8)、同窓生とともに赤土(せきど)社を結成した。25年にパリの博覧会において入賞し、27年(昭和2)帝展に入選して以来、官展で活動した。54年(昭和29)日本芸術院賞を受賞、62年日本芸術院会員となり、72年には文化功労者となった。78年文化勲章受章。陶技では彩埏(さいえん)とよぶ独自の加飾法を開発し、単純な形のほかに、自然の情感を尊ぶ作風をつくりあげた。
