Goujon, Jean

Goujon, Jean
Born around 1510. Normandy?
[Died] about 1568.
French sculptor. His life before 1540, when he was active in Rouen, is unknown, but he is thought to have studied classical style in Italy. His representative works include the sanctuary screen sculptures of the church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois in Paris (1544-45, Louvre Museum) and parts of "Fontaine des Innocents" (1547-49), both of which still remain. As the famous nymph reliefs in the latter show, his style is a beautiful fusion of classical style with delicate and elegant French taste. From 1548 to 1562, he worked with Pierre Lescaut on the construction of the Louvre Palace, producing the decoration of the façade and the Caryatids (c. 1549-53), but these were marred by inappropriate restoration in the 19th century. His whereabouts after 1562 are unknown.
