An ancient Greek polis (city-state) located in the Thrace region on the north coast of the Aegean Sea. It was founded in the 7th century BC as a colony of the Ionian city of Clazomenai, but was destroyed by indigenous Thracians and rebuilt in the second half of the 6th century BC by colonists from Teos, also in Ionia. It flourished in the 6th and 5th centuries BC through grain production and trade with the interior, but was annexed to Macedonia by Philip II in the mid-4th century BC. The philosopher Democritus and the sophist Protagoras were natives of this polis. The ruins can be found in what is now Xanthi prefecture in northeastern Greece.
