The capital of the Aosta Valley in northwest Italy. Located south of the Alps, about 80 km north-northwest of Turin, it is the junction of the road to the Greater St. Bernard Pass and the Lesser St. Bernard Pass. It was a Celtic Thalassian town, but was occupied by the Romans in 25 BC. It is the birthplace of Saint Anselm. There are metalworking (steel, aluminum), a brewery, and a large hydroelectric power plant. In addition to ancient Roman ruins such as the Arch of Augustus and a theater, there are also 12th-century cathedrals, monasteries, and palaces. Population: 35,895 (1991 estimate).

イタリア北西部，バレダオスタ州の州都。アルプスの南，トリノの北北西約 80kmにある大サンベルナール峠に通じる街道と，小サンベルナール峠に通じる街道の分岐点。ケルト系のサラッシ人の町であったが，前 25年ローマに占領された。聖アンセルムスの生地。金属工業 (鉄鋼，アルミニウム) ，ビール醸造の工場や大きな水力発電所がある。アウグスツスのアーチ，劇場などの古代ローマ時代の遺跡のほか，12世紀の聖堂，僧院，宮殿などが残っている。人口3万 5895 (1991推計) 。
