The capital of the Aosta Valley in northwest Italy. Located south of the Alps, about 80 km north-northwest of Turin, it is the junction of the road to the Greater St. Bernard Pass and the Lesser St. Bernard Pass. It was a Celtic Thalassian town, but was occupied by the Romans in 25 BC. It is the birthplace of Saint Anselm. There are metalworking (steel, aluminum), a brewery, and a large hydroelectric power plant. In addition to ancient Roman ruins such as the Arch of Augustus and a theater, there are also 12th-century cathedrals, monasteries, and palaces. Population: 35,895 (1991 estimate).
