…For this reason, Homer was already shrouded in the mist of legend even in ancient times, and various theories were put forward about his date, life, achievements, etc. First, regarding his date, there are theories ranging from the upper limit, which is thought to be based on the 5th century BC historian Hellanicus, who is a contemporary of the Trojan War (the general theory that Troy fell in 1183 BC is based on the 3rd century BC geographer and mathematician Eratosthenes), to the lower limit, which is based on the 4th century BC historian Theopompus, who says that he lived 500 years after the Trojan War. However, today, it seems appropriate to place Homer's date in the latter half of the 8th century BC, because the 7th century BC poets Kallinos and Archilochus mentioned Homer, and because a group of epic poems collectively called kyklos, which sing the parts of the Trojan War story that were not covered in the Iliad and the Odyssey, were created around the 7th to 6th centuries BC, assuming the existence of both poems. …

…このため，ホメロスはすでに古代においてさえ伝説の霧につつまれた存在となっており，その年代，生涯，業績等についてさまざまな説が唱えられていた。　まず年代に関しては，上限は，前5世紀の史家ヘラニコスHellanikosに由来すると思われるトロイア戦争と同時代人説(トロイア陥落の年は，前3世紀の地理学者，数学者エラトステネスによる前1183年説が一般的)から，下限は，前4世紀の史家テオポンポスのトロイア戦争後500年の人とする説までがある。しかし今日では，前7世紀の詩人カリノスKallinosとアルキロコスがホメロスに言及していること，トロイア戦争物語のうち，《イーリアス》《オデュッセイア》が扱わなかった部分を歌う〈圏kyklos〉と総称される一群の叙事詩が，両詩の存在を前提にして前7～前6世紀ごろにつくられていることなどから，ホメロスの年代を前8世紀後半に置くのが妥当と思われる。…
