Kusayoshi - Kusayoshi

Japanese: クサヨシ - くさよし

It is a perennial grass of the grass family that grows near water or in moist grasslands with good sunlight, and its name "kusayoshi" (grass reed) reflects its smaller size and softness compared to common reeds. It has horizontal underground stems that grow in sparse clusters, standing upright and reaching a height of over 1m. The leaves are broad and linear, about 20cm long and 1cm wide, and have a whitish green color. In May and June, it produces thin, dense panicles about 15cm long, and the branches, about 5cm long, grow in rows along the main axis, with some diagonal opening at the time of flowering. The spikelets are densely packed, so the inflorescence looks almost cylindrical.

水辺や日当りのよい湿った草地に生えるイネ科の多年草で，草葦（くさよし）の名はヨシに比べて小型で軟らかいことをあらわしている。横にはった地下茎があって，茎はまばらに群生し，直立して高さは1m以上ある。葉は幅広い線形で，長さ20cm弱，幅は1cmくらいで，白っぽい緑色をしている。5～6月に，長さ15cmほどの細めで密な円錐花序を立て，長さ5cm余りの枝は開花時に多少斜開するほかは主軸に並んで立ち，小穂が密生するから，花序はほとんど円柱状に見える。
