… There are two types of relocation ceremonies at general shrines: regular and temporary. The regular ones are called "shikinen senzasai" (yearly relocation ceremonies), and are held every 7, 13, 20, 30, 50, etc. years. In these cases, when renovations or construction are to be carried out, the divine spirit is transferred from the main shrine to a temporary shrine (gonden), and then back to the main shrine when the construction is completed. The former is called the temporary shrine relocation ceremonies (sotosengu), and the latter the main shrine relocation ceremonies (seisengu). Both involve the moving of the divine spirit, and are therefore considered to be the most important ceremonies. …
