Kusatobera - Kusatobera

A shrub of the Pittosporaceae family (APG classification: Pittosporaceae). The stems are thick and 1 to 2 meters tall. The leaves are gathered at the ends of the branches, alternate, narrowly obovate, and fleshy. From June to August, cymes appear in the leaf axils, and produce lip-shaped flowers about 2 cm long. The flowers are white at first, then turn yellow. It grows on the coasts of Ogasawara, Kyushu (Yakushima, Tanegashima), and Okinawa, and is widely distributed from southern China and Southeast Asia to the Pacific islands. The name comes from the fact that the leaves resemble Pittosporum tobira and the stems are soft and grassy.

The Goodeniaceae family has an inferior ovary with one or two locules, each containing one to four ovules. There are about 14 genera and 320 species in the world, of which one genus and one species are found in Japan.

The family Ceratoberidae is also classified as Ceratoberidae in the APG classification. According to this classification, there are about 12 genera and 440 species in the world, and one species in Japan.

クサトベラ科（APG分類：クサトベラ科）の低木。茎は太く高さ1、2メートル。葉は枝先に集まり互生し、狭倒卵形、肉質である。6～8月、葉腋(ようえき)に集散花序を出し、長さ2センチメートルほどの唇形花をつける。花は白色でのちに黄色に変わる。小笠原(おがさわら)、九州（屋久島(やくしま)、種子島(たねがしま)）、沖縄の海岸に生え、中国南部、東南アジアから太平洋諸島に広く分布する。名は、葉のようすがトベラを思わせ、茎は柔らかく草質なのでいう。

　クサトベラ科Goodeniaceaeは、子房は下位で1、2室、各室に1～4個の胚珠(はいしゅ)がある。世界に約14属320種あり、そのうち日本には1属1種が分布する。
