Huánuco (English spelling)

Japanese: ワヌコ(英語表記)Huánuco
Huánuco (English spelling)
The capital of Huánuco Department in central Peru. It is located in a cool, dry mountain basin in the Andes Mountains, about 270 km north-northeast of the capital Lima, and overlooks the upper reaches of the Huayaga River, a watershed of the Amazon River. It was built by the Spaniards in 1539 on the site of an Inca settlement, but was later moved to its current location about 50 km away due to attacks by Indians. During the colonial period, it developed as a Christian missionary center. Today, it is the center of the surrounding agricultural areas, distributing sugarcane, cotton, coffee, cacao, and fruit. There are cotton spinning and sugar mills nearby. The colonial era churches of St. Cristobal and St. Francis are preserved in the city, and the Kotosh ruins, belonging to the oldest civilization in the Andes, are nearby. Combined with the pleasant climate, it is also a popular tourist destination. It is the location of the National University of Huánuco (1964). There is a road from Lima. Population 86,300 (estimated 1990).
