This facility marked the beginning of the settlement movement in Japan. It was established in 1897 by Katayama Sen in Kanda-Misakicho, Tokyo, as a base for the development of educational and cultural activities for workers and community welfare projects based on the ideals of Christian socialism during the early stages of labor movement organization. The founding of the facility was prompted by Katayama's visit to East London to see the settlement movement, which was an important part of the British workers' education movement. It was named after the British Christian socialist C. Kingsley. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
