It is an animal of the Indriidae family in the Primates order of the Mammalia class. It is a single species of prosimian in one genus. It is endemic to the island of Madagascar, and lives in the rainforests of the eastern part of the island. It is the largest of all prosimians, with a head and body length of over 60 centimetres. It resembles the sifaka of the same family, but its tail is only about 3 centimetres long and its muzzle is long. It is covered in dense silky hair with a mottled pattern of black-brown and grey-white, although the colour scheme of different parts of its body varies from individual to individual.
