Ezo Island

Japanese: 蝦夷島 - えぞがしま

...It is also called Matsumae-chi, Nihonjin-chi, or Shamo-chi (also written as Ningen-chi). It refers to a certain area in the southern part of Ezo-shima that the Matsumae clan designated as a settlement area and village location for Japanese people as part of its policy to govern Ezo-shima. The area north of Wajin-chi was called Ezo-chi (including parts of the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin Island) and was designated as the residence area of the Ainu people.
