A city in the southeastern part of Oita Prefecture. Also known as Saeki. Established as a city in 1941. The city center is located on the Banjo River delta overlooking Saiki Bay, and was the former castle town of the Mori clan. It is also the central city and fishing port of the Minami-Amabe region. It developed as a military city after the establishment of the Naval Air Corps in 1933, and after the war, industries such as pulp, cement, shipbuilding, and lumbering flourished on the former military facilities, blessed with a harbor and industrial water. Along the coast, there are scattered semi-agricultural and semi-fishing villages on the submerged coastline with rapid ingress and ebb, and dried sardines are a specialty. Flounder and pearl farming are also practiced. The plains produce rice, vegetables, and fruit. The Nippō Main Line, the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway, and National Route 10 pass through the city, and the ruins of Saiki Castle and the Kariu Limestone Cave (a natural monument) are located here. In March 2005, the towns of Kamiura, Yayoi, Ume, Tsurumi, Kamame, Honjo, Naokawa, and Yonemizu were incorporated into the Minamiabe district. Area: 903.11 km2 . Population: 76,951 (2010).
