Kinkin Sensei Eiga no Yume - Kinkin Sensei Eiga no Yume

Yellow cover. 2 volumes, 2 books. Written and illustrated by Koikawa Harumachi. Published in 1775 (An'ei 4). "Kane-Kane Sensei" was a popular phrase at the time, meaning a wealthy, fashionable man who was at the forefront of fashion. Kanemuraya Kanebee, a country boy looking to make a fortune in Edo, dreams of eating the famous millet mochi at Meguro Fudo, and in the fleeting dream of it being ready, he marries a wealthy merchant and enjoys the height of prosperity in the pleasure quarters. However, he witnesses the outcome of being disowned for playing too much, and realizes that the pleasures of a lifetime are nothing more than a dream that lasts until the millet mochi is ready.

The plot is based on the Noh play "Kantan," which has precedents in the previous kusazoshi (Japanese comics) Aohon "Ukiyoeiganomakura," but it skillfully incorporates ideas from earlier sharebon works such as "Tatsumi no Sono" and "Tosei Fuzokutsu," and is set in Edo's red-light districts such as Yoshiwara and Fukagawa. It vividly depicts the various aspects of the connoisseur's consciousness that were popular at the time with innovative illustrations and intelligent writing, successfully turning the realistic world of sharebon into a nonsensical picture book. It completely changed the kusazoshi that had been aimed at children since the Akahon series, making it a reading material for adults, and it is later evaluated as the ancestor of the kibyōshi (Japanese comics with a yellow cover). It has great significance in the history of literature.
