Located in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture, Uji City is adjacent to the south of Kyoto City. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. The Uji River flows through the area, and both banks connected by the Uji Bridge developed as a Watatsu settlement on the Hokuriku Road (later the Nara Kaido) from the Nara period. It was the center of Uji tea cultivation, which began in the Muromachi period and developed under the protection of the Edo Shogunate. The area of tea plantations has been decreasing year by year as residential land has been developed, but the area is still characterized by high-quality tea. Chemical fiber, vehicle, and machine industries are also carried out. Byodoin Temple (World Heritage Site), Ujikami Shrine (World Heritage Site), Uji Shrine, Agata Shrine, Mimurodo Temple, Hashidera Hojoin Temple, Kosho Temple, Manpuku Temple, and Uji Mausoleum are among the attractions. The Nara Line, Keihan Uji Line, Kintetsu Kyoto Line, and Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line run through the area, and residential land development has progressed, making it a satellite city of Kyoto and Osaka. 67.54 km2 . 189,609 people (2010). → Uji / Kowata / Kurikuma → Related topics Fujiwara Tadazane Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
