An Indian philosopher active in the 10th and 11th centuries. He belonged to the Shaivite sect of Kashmir and played an important role in the Pratyabhijñā-darśana school of thought. He wrote "Pratyabhijñakārikā", a commentary on the Bhagavad-gita, as well as "Paramārthasāra" and "Tantrāloka". He was also well-versed in theories of poetry and drama, and wrote "Dhvanyālokalocana", a commentary on "Dhvanyāloka", and "Abhinavabhāratī", a commentary on the Natya-shastra. He was also an important figure in Indian aesthetics, and is known to have written many books, at least 41 of which are known to have been written.
