It corresponds to dibenzo-γ-pyrone and is also called 9-xanthenone. It is a white needle crystal with a melting point of 174°C and a boiling point of 350°C (730mmHg). It is insoluble in water, but is soluble in benzene and chloroform. Xanthone itself does not occur in nature, but is found as an oxy derivative in plants of the Gentianaceae family such as gentian, and as a hydroxy derivative in mango fruit. When concentrated sulfuric acid is added, it becomes a yellow solution that emits pale blue fluorescence. It is synthesized by heating phenyl salicylate or by condensation of salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
