A civil official of the Yi Dynasty in Korea. His pen name was Gi Chi and his pen name was Cangsan. He was from Yeon'an, Hwanghae Province. In 1876, after the Treaty of Amity between Japan and Korea was concluded, he was appointed as a Shushinshi (Emissiary) as a councillor of rituals and visited Japan with a delegation of 75 members. After returning to Korea, he wrote "Il Dong Gi Yu" (Records of a Visit to the East), which had a considerable influence on the perception of Japan at the time. He served as the governor of Taniyama County, the governor of Deokwon Province, and the supervisor of trade affairs in Uiju, and in 1893, when civil unrest broke out in the Hwanggwan and Cheongpung regions, he was dispatched to the area as an envoy. 朝鮮,李朝の文臣。字は季芝,号は蒼山。黄海道延安の人。1876年,日朝修好条規締結ののち,礼曹参議として修信使に任命され,団員75名を率いて日本を訪問。帰国後に著した《日東記游》は,当時の対日本認識に少なからぬ影響を及ぼした。谷山郡守,徳源府使,監理義州通商事務などを歴任し,93年に黄澗・清風地方で民乱が起こった際には,按覈使として現地に派遣された。その後,官職は参判にいたった。【吉野 誠】
