The former name of a town (Sekijo-machi) was in Makabe-gun, western Ibaraki Prefecture. The area currently occupies the southwestern part of Chikusei City. In 1956 (Showa 31), Sekimoto-machi, Kawachi-mura, and Kurogo-mura merged to rename it Sekijo-machi after the ruins of Seki Castle, a nationally designated historic site related to each town and village. In 2005 (Heisei 17), it merged with Shimodate-shi, Makabe-gun's Akeno-machi, and Kyowa-machi to form Chikusei City. The former town area is sandwiched between the Kinu River and the Kokai River, and forms a plateau at an altitude of 30 meters. The Kanto Railway Joso Line and National Route 294 pass through the area. During the Northern and Southern Court period, the Seki clan's territory was a base for the Southern Court, and Kitabatake Chikafusa, author of the aforementioned Jinnō Shōtōki, entered Seki Castle to fight against the Northern Court. In the early modern period, the area prospered through water transport on the Kinugawa River. In addition to producing rice, Chinese chives, and leeks, the area has long been Ibaraki's largest producer of pears. It is also home to the Prefectural Agricultural Center and the Ibaraki Farm of the National Livestock Breeding Center. In addition to the pongee weaving industry, known as Yuki Tsumugi, the area is also home to the Sekidate Industrial Park and Tsukuba Sekijo Industrial Park, and is home to many modern industries. It is also home to the Funadama Kofun, a decorated ancient tomb that is a prefectural designated historic site, and Senmyōji Temple, the head temple of the Kanto Tendai sect.
