...Because of its short growing season, it relies heavily on underground reserves; for example, in the case of Iwaichou, 1/4 to 1/3 of the aboveground biomass at its maximum comes from underground. On the other hand, in the subalpine zone, in the moist areas at the bottom and sides of slopes where avalanches and landslides prevent forests from forming, tall grasslands (large, multi-rotating grasslands) develop. They consist of large, broad-leaved perennial herbs, such as Job's tears, Scutellaria baicalensis, and Japanese knotweed, that grow to 1 to 2 meters tall, and have a large underground reserve, and although their growing season is short, their aboveground parts are large.
