1909‐69 A contemporary South Indian populist politician who is as famous as Kamaraj. In 1949, he founded the regional nationalist party Dravidian Progressive Movement (DMK), and advocated a South India for Dravidians, launching anti-North India and anti-Brahmin movements. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1962 and to the Senate in 1967, and served as Chief Minister of Madras state from 1967 to 1969, working to Tamilize the state, including changing its name to Tamil Nadu.
