It is the westernmost island of the Lesser Sunda Islands (Nusa Tenggara) in western Indonesia, facing eastern Java across the narrow Bali Strait. There are many high mountains in the north, including the active volcano Agung (3,142m). Most of the inhabitants are Balinese who speak the Balinese language. In the Islamicized Indonesia, it is known as an island that retains Hindu traditions, and there are many Hindu temples. It has been influenced by Javanese Hindu culture since ancient times, but when the Majapahit dynasty was destroyed in the 16th century, the nobles and high priests fled to Bali, and the islanders are proud to be descendants of the Majapahits. It is famous as a tourist destination for its unique dances (many of which are Hindu mythological plays such as Kecak), gamelan music, and stone carving art. It produces rice and coffee, and also raises cattle. It is a province of Indonesia, and its capital, Denpasar, has an international airport. It has an ^{area of 5,780 km2} and a population of 3,890,757 (2010).

インドネシア西部，小スンダ列島（ヌサ・テンガラ）最西端の島で，狭いバリ海峡を隔ててジャワ島東部と対する。活火山アグン（3142m）をはじめ北側には高山が多い。住民のほとんどはバリ語を話すバリ人。イスラム化したインドネシアの中で，ヒンドゥー教の伝統を残す島として知られ，多数のヒンドゥー教寺院がある。古くからジャワのヒンドゥー文化の影響を受けたが，16世紀にマジャパイト王朝が滅亡したとき，貴族や高僧がバリに逃れたために，島民はマジャパイトの末裔を自負する。特有の踊り（ケチャなどヒンドゥー神話劇が多い）やガムラン音楽，石彫美術などで観光地として著名。米，コーヒーを産し，牛の畜産もある。インドネシアの一州をなし，州都デンパサルには国際空港がある。5780km²。389万757人（2010）。
