He was a member of the Doboshu (communist group) of the Muromachi Shogunate, and was the chief envoy of the first ship sent to Ming China by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1401. The deputy envoy was the Hakata merchant Koitomi, who had encouraged the dispatch. He returned to Japan the following year with the Ming envoys Tenrin Doi and Ichian Ichijo.
