…The city was founded in 1781 when the Spanish governor Felipe de Neve led a group of settlers from Mexico and established a small village around the current Olvera Street in downtown. Twelve years earlier, when Gaspar de Portolá, heading for Monterey Bay, stopped here, he named the nearby river "Rio de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles de Porciúncula" (River of the Virgin Mary (Queen of the Angels of Porciuncula)). Neve shortened the name to Los Angeles, which later came to be pronounced in an English style. Los Angeles came under Mexican rule in 1821 when Mexico gained independence from Spain, but it became a part of the United States as a result of the Mexican-American War (1846-48). …
