A general term for birds of the family Raphidae (Columbiformes). Also called the dodo. At least three species are known in this family. None of them survive today, and all three became extinct during historical times, but remains include skeletons, incomplete stuffed specimens, descriptions in old travelogues, and paintings. They were endemic to the Mascarene Islands east of Madagascar, and their wings had degenerated, making them completely unable to fly. They were large, about the size of a turkey, and were an awkward bird with a huge beak, strong, short legs, and a small tail. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
