There is geographical isolation caused by obstacles such as oceans, mountains, and rivers, and social isolation caused by differences in race, language, and customs.

〘名〙① へだたること。へだてはなすこと。また、へだたりはなれること。※土井本周易抄（1477）一「天は天、地は地と隔離するは非_二交泰之義_一」※硝子戸の中（1915）〈夏目漱石〉一「小さい私と広い世の中とを隔離(カクリ)してゐる此硝子戸」〔杜牧‐阿房宮賦〕② 感染症の患者などを通常の社会生活から遮断して、一定の場所に移すこと。※伝染病予防法（明治三〇年）（1897）八条「病毒感染の疑ある者を隔離所其の他適当の場所に隔離することを得」③ ある一つの集団内では交配が行なわれるが、他の違った集団同士では、もはや交配が行なわれなくなる現象。海洋、山脈、河川などの障害物によって起こる地理的隔離と、人種、言語、風俗の違いによって起こる社会的隔離がある。
