Born: 1880. Rennes, France [Died] 1962 French geographer. He first studied botany and taught biology at a junior high school. He became interested in human geography while conducting field observations, and became a student of Bidart de la Brache. He mainly studied the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean region, but in 1940 he became a professor at the Sorbonne and was the leader of the French school of geography during the most difficult period of the German occupation and the postwar period. He provided a biological and technological foundation for the French school's concept of life style, and advocated exchanges between neighboring sciences, especially sociology and geography. His major works in his later years include Les Fondements de la géographie humaine (Foundations of Human Geography) (3 volumes, 1948-53) and L'Homme sur la terre (Man on the Earth) (61).
