The title of the person who represented the citizens in the medieval Italian comunes. In the 13th century, the comunes created a self-defense organization called the popolo, and the popolos, following the example of the podestà, invited people from other cities to represent them for a one-year term. The person who held this position was called the Capitano del Popolo (head of the popolo).
