Surdas - Sūrdās (English spelling)

Indian Brahmacharya poet and singer. A passionate follower of Krishna. Being poor and blind, he lived alone on the banks of the Yamuna River and gained fame as a poet and singer, but in 1510 he met and learned from Master Ballabha, and his poetic talents improved. He sang impromptu hymns to Krishna as a musician at the Srinath Temple. His poems are based on the sacred text Bhagavata Purana, especially its tenth chapter, and praise the deeds of Lord Krishna. They sing of the playfulness of the infant Krishna, the love of the people around him, the adventures and perils of the infant Krishna and his mother's worries, the pure love between Radha and Krishna, and the sadness of their separation. They are known as world-class masterpieces of lyric poetry and have had a great influence on Indian literature ever since. The collection of poems is called Sursagar (Ocean of Sur) and there are many manuscripts, but it has been edited since the 19th century, and the Nawalkisha edition (1920) and the Nagari Pracharini Sabha Kashi edition (1934) are the most commonly used editions.
