This refers to the ideas and beliefs that arose within the British Liberal Party from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. After Gladstone retired, some Liberal Party members, such as Lord Rosebery (Prime Minister 1894-95), R.B. Haldane, E. Gray, and H.H. Asquith (Prime Minister 1908-16), became interested in the unification of the British Empire and were called Liberal Imperialists. When the Boer War broke out in 1899, they opposed the pro-Boer mainstream of the party and supported the war, and thereafter formed a faction within the party.
