...the name of the revolutionary movement in Nicaragua. Its official name is the Sandinista National Liberation Front (abbreviated as FSLN). This movement, named after AC Sandino, a Nicaraguan revolutionary who was assassinated in 1934, was founded in 1961 by radical urban youth in opposition to the Somoza regime, which had long ruled the country dictatorially.

Anti-Somoza forces branched out into various branches, but in 1961 the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), named after Sandino, was formed and gradually became the center of political and military offensives, gaining support among workers, students, peasants, and others (Sandinista movement). Eventually the church and the middle class also became more anti-Somoza, and after Somoza assassinated Pedro Joaquín Chamorro (1924-78), a member of the Chamorro family and editor of an anti-government newspaper, in January 1978, they deepened their cooperation with the Sandinistas. …
