This refers to measuring or inspecting whether the dimensions, shape, and surface irregularities of machine parts are made as specified during or after processing. It is also called precision measurement. When machines were made one by one, machine parts, such as shafts and holes, were made to fit together exactly and then assembled. As production volume increased, division of labor meant that machine parts were made in different processes, at different times, by different workers, and then combined in any combination. Machine parts must be interchangeable to function properly as a machine even when combined in any combination. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
