Beautifying

Following Marx's lead, he named this force "capitalism" and elucidated its essence from a completely new perspective in his "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism" (1904-05). In this monumental essay, he traces the ethos of capitalism to the ethics of the "professionals (Berufsmensch)" and discovers that it originates from the "innerweltliche Askese" of Protestantism. This view that religion established capitalism was a nail in the coffin for 19th century rationalism, which equated religion with superstition and magic.
