...An ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period. His real surname was Kawamura, and he was born in Warigesui, Honjo, Edo. He was adopted by Nakajima Ise, a mirror maker for the shogunate, and his childhood name was Tokitaro, later changing to Tetsuzo. "Hokusai" was only a temporary artistic name, and he changed it about 30 times in his life. He also called himself "Gakyojin" (a madman of painting), and lived a life of devotion to painting, and had the widest range of work among ukiyo-e artists. In 1778 (7th year of the An'ei era), he became a pupil of Katsukawa Shunsho, and the following year, he began to produce actor paintings under the pseudonym Shunro. Thereafter, he produced actor paintings, sumo paintings, uki-e, and illustrations for kibyoshi. After being expelled from the Katsukawa school around 1794, he studied the Kano, Sumiyoshi, Rinpa, and Western-style painting schools, and took the name Tawaraya Sori II.
