…There are various branches of samurai in the Middle Ages. (1) The Tada branch of the Seiwa Genji. It is said to have begun when Sukekuni, the direct descendant of Minamoto no Yorimasa, lived in Ota-go, Tanba Province, and took the name Ota. Sukekuni served Uesugi Shigefusa, and in 1252 (4th year of Kencho), accompanied Shigefusa on his journey eastward under Prince and Shogun Munetaka. Later, when the Uesugi clan split off, he served the Ogigayatsu clan and became its chief retainer. Ota Dokan is said to be a descendant of this branch. (2) A samurai family active as legal bureaucrats in the Kamakura and Muromachi Shogunate.
