Rhinencephalon

Japanese: 嗅脳 - きゅうのう（英語表記）rhinencephalon

The area of the brain related to the sense of smell. It is well developed in animals, but in humans it is a vestigial part that exists at the base of the cerebral hemispheres from the frontal lobe to the temporal lobe. It is divided into an anterior part consisting of the olfactory bulb, olfactory tract, and olfactory triangular area, and a posterior part consisting of the anterior foramen and paralaminar gyrus. In a broad sense, it also refers to the area including the fornix.

脳における嗅覚に関係する領域で，動物では発達しているが，ヒトでは，大脳半球底面において前頭葉から側頭葉にかけて存在する痕跡的な部分。嗅球，嗅索，嗅三角から成る前部と，前有孔質と終板傍回から成る後部に分けられる。広義にはさらに脳弓を加えたものをさす。
