The area of the brain related to the sense of smell. It is well developed in animals, but in humans it is a vestigial part that exists at the base of the cerebral hemispheres from the frontal lobe to the temporal lobe. It is divided into an anterior part consisting of the olfactory bulb, olfactory tract, and olfactory triangular area, and a posterior part consisting of the anterior foramen and paralaminar gyrus. In a broad sense, it also refers to the area including the fornix. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
