A model form of prayer that Jesus is said to have taught his disciples. It is recorded in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4, but the former is longer and the expressions and the situation in which it is spoken are slightly different. Neither of the two can be considered the original, and each form was linked to a specific situation. The name "Lord's Prayer" is not found in the Gospels, but was given to it later as it became established in church worship. The Lord's Prayer actually used today is in the following form: "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, and give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen." [Hiroshi Tsuchiya] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
