Usuirokonomacho (English: evening brown)

Usuirokonomacho (English: evening brown)

This butterfly belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Satyridae. It is often seen in the southwestern part of Japan from summer to autumn, but its frequency decreases as it travels north to the Kanto, Tohoku and Hokkaido regions. Its estimated northern limit of native habitat is the southern coast of Shikoku and Kyushu, and specimens collected north of this line are likely migrants from the south, or temporary outbreaks of such individuals. Outside of Japan, it is widely distributed in tropical regions of Asia and Africa, making it the most widely distributed of the Satyridae. Its wingspan is about 60-70 mm. Its wings are distinctive, with horn-like protrusions on the outer edge near the tip of the forewings and a tail-like protrusion on the hindwings. The upper surface of the wings is brown, and there is an eye pattern containing white spots near the tip of the forewings. The pattern on the underside varies depending on the season of emergence, with a wavy pattern in the summer type and a dead leaf pattern in the autumn type. They overwinter as adults, but this is rare among the Satyridae in Japan, with only two species, this one and the other, being the Black Coneworm. The larvae feed on plants from the Poaceae family, such as Job's tears, Chinese chisel, sugar cane, Japanese laurel, and rice.
