A merchant from Alexandria in the 6th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. Traveled from Egypt to India and Ceylon. Indicopleustes means "navigator to India." Around 550, he wrote the 12 volumes of Christian Geography. This attacked the Egyptian astronomy theory of the time in order to prove the descriptions in the Bible literally, but the descriptions of Indian geography, flora and fauna, and information on Christianity that spread to India are considered valuable historical sources. Cosmas seems to have been a Nestorian Christian. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
