A term referring to the officially recognized canon, as opposed to the apocrypha of the Bible. By extension, it has come to mean a standard or criterion. In modern literary criticism, it refers to literary works that are recognized as great and worthy of study in academia and educational institutions. In the 1970s in the West, attempts to critically reinterpret the mechanisms of literary history and canon formation, which had been dominated in tangible and intangible ways by white male dominance, from the perspective of minorities such as ethnic minorities, women, and homosexuals became more common. The progress of such reinterpretations by minorities, combined with the rise of cultural studies, feminist criticism, and new historicist criticism from the 1980s onwards, brought about a major reorganization of the canon. As a result, a considerable number of minority literatures that had previously been excluded from literary history and literary research were rescued. This trend reached Japan about 10 years later, and immediately brought about a major change in the subject of literary research and literary criticism. However, a simple question remains: do 19th century American domestic novels not captivate the hearts of their readers in the same way as the "great" Shakespeare? We need to open our eyes to the pluralism and plurality of cultures, while at the same time turning our attention once again to the process by which "great" literary works create beauty and meaning. How to reconcile these two needs and explain them is a contemporary issue in literary studies and criticism. 聖書の外典に対して、公認された正典を表す語。転じて、標準、規準を意味するようになった。現代文芸批評では、アカデミズム、教育機関等において、偉大な、学ぶに値するとして権威づけられた文学作品を指す。欧米では、1970年代に入ると、白人男性中心主義によって有形無形に支配されてきた文学史やキャノン形成のメカニズムを、少数派民族、女性、同性愛者など、少数者の立場から批判的に読み直す試みが盛んになる。そうしたマイノリティーによる読み替え作業の進展は、80年代以降の、文化研究、フェミニズム批評、新歴史主義批評の興隆とも相まって、キャノンの大幅な組み替えをもたらした。その結果、それまで文学史や文学研究から排除されていた、少数派の文学が相当数、救い出された。こうした動向はほぼ10年遅れで日本にも及び、文学研究、文学批評の対象をたちまち、大きく様変わりさせた。しかし依然として残るのは、19世紀アメリカ家庭小説は、「偉大」なるシェークスピアと同じようには、読む者の心を魅了しないのではないか、という素朴な疑問である。文化の多元性、複数性に目を開くことと、その一方で、「偉大」な文学作品が美と意味とを生み出していくプロセスにもう一度目を向けること。この2つをいかに両立させて説いていくかが、文学研究、文学批評の今日的な課題となっている。
