Space Charter

Japanese: スペース･チャーター（英語表記）space‐charter

One of the operational cooperation systems adopted by Japanese shipping companies. The rapid spread of containerization of cargo transport to international liner routes from the latter half of the 1960s led shipping companies to invest not only in container ships, but also in specialized port wharf terminals. This required huge investments to participate in the container transport market, making it impossible for most of the world's liner shipping companies to operate routes independently as they had done in the past. As a result, these liner shipping companies cooperated with each other through capital and business alliances, reducing their capital burden and realizing their entry into the container market.

日本の海運会社で採用している運航協力体制の一つ。1960年代の後半から急速に国際定期航路に広まった貨物輸送のコンテナー化は，コンテナー専用船に対する投資ばかりでなく，港湾埠頭ターミナルの専用化をも船会社にもたらすことになった。このため，コンテナー輸送市場に参加するには巨額の投資を必要とし，世界のほとんどの定期船会社は従来のような1社単独による航路経営を不可能にされた。そこで，これら定期船会社は資本や業務上の提携を通じて互いに協力し合うことで資本負担の軽減をはかり，コンテナー市場への進出を実現した。
